Author Bio:

Rachel A. Brune graduated from the NYU Tisch School of the Arts in May 2000, and was immediately plunged into the low-stakes world of entry-level executive assistant-ship. Her unexpected journey out of that world and into the military is chronicled in her self-published book Echoes and Premonitions.

Rachel served five years as a combat journalist, including two tours in Iraq, and a brief stint as a columnist for her hometown newspaper. After her second tour, she attended graduate school at the University at Albany in NY, where she earned her MA in Political Communication, and her commission as a second lieutenant in the military police corps.

Although her day job has taken in her in many strange, often twisted directions, Rachel continues to write and publish short fiction. She released her first novel, Soft Target, in early 2013. In addition to writing for the online military interest zine "Task & Purpose," she blogs her thoughts about reading and the writing life at The Infamous Scribbler. 1. How did you get started in writing?

I’ve been writing for a long time, but once my daughter was born (2014), I decided to leave full-time employment and become a WAHM—that’s “Write At Home Mom.” I soon learned that my pre-delivery plans were thrown into chaos by LJ’s arrival, but now that she’s a little older, I’m able to carve out a routine and stick to it.

I started submitting short stories a few years ago, and eventually built up to a resume of pieces that had been accepted into a variety of markets—paying, charity, token paying magazines and anthologies. I finished a novel, Cold Run, which was published by Untold Press, and am currently working on a novel, a short story collection of steampunk detective pieces, and a number of other short stories. The latest of the steampunk detective series will be appearing in Merely This and Nothing More: Poe Goes Punk, which will be released May 31 from Writerpunk Press.

1. Who is your favorite character?

This is such a tough question! Of the characters I’ve written, I’m very partial to Detective Mignon Boudreaux. She’s a veteran, a tinker—smart, tough, and capable—who keeps going after the truth of the matter, even when it’s not politically convenient for her boss.

As for characters written by others, one of my absolute favorite is Puck, from Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. There is so much magic and almost a euphoric sadness that permeates the “dream.” I’ve always wanted to see a steampunk version of the play, as I think the two aesthetics would meld very well.

1. Who is your favorite author?
   This is another tough question. I think my favorite authors change depending on what I’m into at the moment. Lately, I’ve been re-reading the Harry Potter series, and realizing how much I love J.K. Rowling for making me care about all of her characters—even the inherently unlikeable ones. That takes true talent.
2. When do you usually write?
   If I don’t write in the morning, it becomes very difficult for me to sit down at my desk and work. Luckily, I have access to day care for a few hours a day, which allows me to get a good workout in, and then shower, change, and head to Starbucks to get my writing done for the day. If I hit 1K in an hour or two, I reward myself with something sweet!

1. Do you listen to music while writing? If so what?.

I’ve tried, and sometimes it works, but in the past few months, I can’t do it. For some reason, I’ve started to find it very distracting. I love music, but not when I’m writing.

1. What books have most influenced your life?

Sitting here on my couch, looking over at my bookshelf, I see some HP Lovecraft (scared me silly as a kid,) Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night (my dad shared his love with us and it rubbed off), Redwall by Brian Jacques (one of my absolute favorites since I read it as a teenager), and a collection of Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories. I think what they have in common is that they are all great fiction, with characters that have stayed with me long after I closed the covers … until I went back and opened them again.

1. What are you passionate about these days?

I’m currently training for a sprint triathlon in June, which will be my first time attempting this sort of endurance event. I’m very nervous about it, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to try, so wish me luck! I’m also currently finishing a novel, Steel-Toed Blues, about a blues guitarist and Army veteran who starts to stumble over the border between this world and the Faerie realm. Additionally, I’m also working up a class on how to write better fight scenes; my first workshop is this Saturday! Last, I’ve had a chance to read the ARC of the Poe Goes Punk anthology, and I’m very excited for its release—I think that this is one of my favorite projects that I’ve been able to be a part of.
